I can think of few better ways to celebrate what Image is all about than by welcoming back one of the most incredible storytelling teams in comics history as they embark on the second half of a true epic-in-the-making.” “ Saga launched at Image during the company’s 20th anniversary in 2012, so it seems more than fitting that the series is returning to shops just in time for our 30th anniversary next year. And when I couldn’t find the poems to express the things I was feeling, that’s what started me writing poetry, and that was when I was twelve or thirteen.” In other words, I literally communicated through poetry. What happened to you yesterday? And I would recite a poem and somewhere in that poem would be a line or a feeling I would be sharing. People would say, well what do you think, Audre. I would read poems, and I would memorize them. Of her poetic beginnings Lorde commented in Black Women Writers: “I used to speak in poetry. ![]() She attended Catholic schools before graduating from Hunter High School and published her first poem in Seventeen magazine while still a student there. ![]() Lorde was born in New York City to West Indian immigrant parents. A self-described “black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet,” Audre Lorde dedicated both her life and her creative talent to confronting and addressing injustices of racism, sexism, classism, and homophobia. ![]() ![]() Susan Jeffers wrote about creating the artwork for this story: With just a few lines on each page, this is a perfect introduction for young children. The simple text clearly explains the gift of the Nutcracker at the Christmas party, the Nutcracker's fight with the Mouse King, and Marie's magical journey with the prince. She captures the excitement and emotional tenor of the story in a way that captivates audiences. The soft hues and intricate details will draw young children into the story. Jeffer's illustrations bring alive a sense of wonder and enchantment. ![]() Set in the Victorian times, this version of the Nutcracker is a beautiful, simple introduction to the story and the ballet. ![]() When the dolls started dancing, she said, "Mommy, they're people." If you can, try to read a picture book with the story before sharing the ballet - young children will get so much more out of the ballet if they know the story beforehand. This year, we took my youngest to the San Francisco ballet for the first time and she was enthralled. One of our holiday traditions that we love to share with our children is seeing the Nutcracker ballet each year, whether it's going to the ballet or watching it on TV. ![]() ![]() Not thinking about anything else but her career, her love for travel and an admiration for Hemingway’s work, she eventually secures a press pass and joins him there. He suggests she come to Spain and report on the Spanish Civil War with him. ![]() Until a fateful encounter with Hemingway at a bar in Key West changes her direction. In the beginning of the novel, all she wants to do is write something that matters, however, it’s not going the way she envisions. I felt such a connection to Gellhorn and her need to have a voice and her writing taken seriously. She paved the way for female reporters who followed and is an inspiration to countless people and probably even more so when they read this book. Gellhorn is a fiercely independent, ambitious young woman who would become one of the greatest war correspondents of the twentieth century. While his actions impact their lives, the stories still felt like theirs. But in McLain’s previous work The Paris Wife and now Love and Ruin, McLain does an admirable job of focusing on the women in his life and he’s a secondary character. He’s a larger than life figure, some of the truths in his life seem fictional. While I enjoy tales about Ernest Hemingway, there’s always a bit of concern if he will overpower a story. ![]() ![]() A finger-sized processor board its exact purpose unknown. Although written in the same biting prose, it is third person, so you don’t have the same emotional closeness, but it reads like the fairy tales my mom read aloud to me when I was little. Less than 200 pages, it is also full of beautiful illustrations and broken up into chapters with titles and title pages. Instead, Black takes a more story-book approach. This book was nothing like that-and I adored it. After Queen of Nothing revealed Cardan had always felt differently about Jude than he’d let on, I desperately wanted to see their relationship again from his perspective. ![]() I assumed this would follow the same style, simply telling a short snippet of the original series from Cardan’s point of view. I fell in love with this series originally because of its biting prose and the first person narration that made me feel right inside the series’s main character Jude’s head. In all honesty, this novella was not what I expected. The language, the style, the story, the pacing, I savoured every page. It took me on a journey unlike anything else I have ever read. Published in 1998 when she was just 28, it has been rightly hailed as a standout in lesbian Literature. Tipping the Velvet was Sarah Waters’ first novel. I am thrilled to write about Tipping the Velvet for my first book review on my blog. ![]() |
